smallest turning blank size?

Post by rgouette » Mon Mar 02, 2020 8:26 am

Howdy, I'm curious to know what you folks would say is the smallest sized(WxH) turning blank on could
get away with, to turn a chanter?
I ask specifically, because of an opportunity to acquire some 1" x 1" stock...
Mind you, I don't need key mounts.. just a non keyed concert chanter would be the goal..

I believe 2" is fairly common, if not standard, but ...how low can you go?

Cheers,
R

It depends on how accurate your drilling process is . 1"x 1" is fine for a keyless chanter and 1 1/2" x 1 1/2" (or even 1 3/8"x 1 3/8") is OK if you want key blocks provided you can drill without wandering of centre.
