Newbie needs advice

Post by Orchidman » Tue Sep 04, 2012 11:09 am

I need some help in getting a set of pipes. I can read music, I play keyboards, guitar and various saxaphones but have always wanted to play the pipes. I live in Staffordshire which is not noted for the playing of the Uilleann pipes so where do I start, is there a pipemaker within driving distance and how much should I pay? Any advice will be very gratefully received.

I don't know off hand if there is a pipes maker nearby to you but have a look at these lists and you may find some one close.

Ideally a local pipes maker is the best situation especially if you are learning by yourself. If you are a total beginner when something doesn't sound just right you will ask, "is it me, is it the pipes or is it the reed".
A maker that is somewhat close by will be able to answer that question fairly quickly.

The other thing is try to find a local experienced piper who you can get some regular lessons from. Also if you do find a local piper who makes reeds, this person would be a great help in tracking down a good second hand practice set and a great help keeping it in tune too!

Best of luck.

Sam Lawrence (Hunter Pipes) is in Bradford. He's an excellent pipemaker and has practice sets for beginners.

There's also the North West Uilleann Pipers in Manchester. They seem to have a loaner set available.
