Leo Rowsome Mainstocks

Post by ausdag » Thu Aug 09, 2012 12:41 am

I've been looking at photos of various Leo Rowsome pipes and am wondering about the innards of his all-metal mainstocks.

On the NPU Source, close-up photos (see below) reveal that both the front and rear faces are wood. So my question is, are they hollow metal mainstocks with wooden ends, or is the whole stock a solid wood stock but lined outside with a metal sleeve?

Metal sleeve over solid wood.

As I recall it, the Seery set's stock is hollow. The front plug is solid, but I think it's some kind of pewter-like metal.

That's interesting, I have never heard of a Rowsome hollow stock before.

In fact I remember the early/mid eighties when the whole concept of the hollow stock was unknown to most pipemakers. Which I suppose makes it all too easy to assume they weren't the done thing for a long time.

Yes - though I need to check with the current custodian of the set and confirm my memory. I did some work on the stock and remember a few surprises, but it was several years ago and my memory could be playing tricks on me. I do remember being very surprised to find very little wood in the stock's construction.

Interesting, thanks Bill and Mr.
I've noticed some of his metal stocks where the front face is also metal and what looks like metal tubing where the drones and regs fit (going by photos once again). I had assumed they were hollow... Edit to add that I just realised I'm referring to the Seery set that Bill just mentioned. That clears it all up.
