Interview with an Apprentice Pipemaker

Post by ausdag » Fri Mar 18, 2011 1:47 am

Journalist: So how do you find the different activities associated with pipemaking?

Apprentice Pipemaker: Such as?

J: Such as Putting the hole up the centre?

APM: It can be a bit boring.

J: Fitting springs to to keys?

APM: Quite rivetting.

J: Making bass drones?

APM: It drives me round the bend.

J: How about sound boxes?

APM: It has a certain resonance to it.

J:Undercutting tone holes

APM: That leaves me well in tune with the way things work.

J: Bag making?

APM: A leaky bag can leave me feeling a bit deflated.

J: Bellows making?

APM: A well sealed bellows leaves me feeling quite pumped.

J: Tying in stocks?

APM: Doing that too hastily can get me in a real bind.

J: Blowpipes?

APM: Trying to eliminate burping valves can get me into a real flap.

J: Tuning Drone reeds?

APM: I could wax lyrical all day about that.

J: What about making chanter reeds?

APM: I approach that task with un-bridled enthusiasm.

Just read this - what a classic! Did you make this up yourself, ausdag? You really are a dag.
You know, it's a pity - I just moved from Brisbane to Melbourne... would have loved to have had a chat

Thanks feathertosser,

Yeah, it all came to me one night at a Brisbane Pipers' meeting with Malcolm McLaren and friends. We got talking about making keys for regs I think, and then I just couldn't seem to stop coming up with the one-liners. Happened just after the Brisbane floods and I think we were all in need of a little 'comic relief'. Well, I was at least - I think the others just wanted to play tunes.

Anyway, yeah, if you're up this way again, send me a message and we'll try to meet up.

All the best,
