Reed too stiff, too much pressure needed to play

Post by CBPiper » Tue Jan 18, 2011 10:40 pm

Hi,

I have a reed maybe 8 years old, plays well in tune and in a range of weather conditions. In the last year, it takes an increasing amount of pressure to play. There is no room to play with the bridle, seems like a little scraping is required, but I'm reluctant to alter this long term performer in any permanent way.

Suggestions?

Mike

One thing I found helpful was to take a reed that was too stiff into the steamy atmosphere of the bathroom when taking my morning shower - once should be enough. I put it on top of the the bathroom cabinet on the opposite wall, not too close to the shower. Then when the reed dried out I found it had a bit more give in the fibres.

If your left with no other alternatives using some 220, 320, or 400 grit sandpaper to lightly sand the top 5 millimeters of the lips will make the reed easier to play as well. Just be careful when doing it so you don't wind up with uneven lips or edges.

It might just need cleaning. Ted gives some instructions in this thread:

I'd try that before attempting anything permanent.

I may be way off the mark here, but I've been in the same situation, and it turned out my bag was leaking like a sieve and I'd simply 'gotten used' to the added airflow until it was too much.
