Getting started- Practice sets

Post by ecuffney » Tue Sep 09, 2014 8:40 pm

Hi all,

I have been playing GHB pipes for about ten years but would like to start on Uilleann. I imagine buying a practice set would be the first step. What is the best way to purchase one without getting a Pakistani rosewood knockoff? How is the transition from GHB to Uilleann in terms of fingering and bellows technique? I am on a very limited budget and as I am based in California would most likely be teaching myself. Is this even feasible?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Did you read the Newbie thread on this forum? Lots of information there about buying pipes.

And why would living in California consign you to having to teach yourself? There is a fairly large and very active contingent of uilleann pipers on the West Coast. You just need to make some contacts with the community to see who is near to you.

Here's a couple of club links to get you started: San Francisco, SoCal.
