Announcement: Uilleann Boot Camp at GNIPC Tionól

Post by MickBauer » Fri Sep 05, 2014 2:20 pm

For the very first time, the Great Northern Irish Pipers Club is pleased to offer an "Uilleann Pipe Boot Camp" as part of its 2014 Tionól (Sept. 27 & 28, in St. Paul, MN). This is targeted towards people who have never touched the pipes, or have a practice set in a closet somewhere that they never got around to learning to play, etc., and have only been waiting for good dose of solid instruction to get started. We're here to help!

In essence, this will be a "third session track" in our existing Tionól format: besides the Beginner/Intermediate and Advanced group rooms, we'll add a Boot Camp (absolute beginners) room. Boot Camp attendees will also be eligible for private lessons with guest artists, unless they find that intimidating for some reason. (Which they shouldn't: all Tionól private lessons are taught at the level the student is at, not the level the instructor plays at!)

GNIPC 2014 Tionól Boot Camp attendees will learn the most basic technique and lore of the uilleann pipes, including at least one tune! If a Boot Camp candidate has no pipes, they can rent a practice set from the Club for $40 for the duration of the Tionól, but they should RSVP ASAP, due to limited availability of instruments.

Please spread the word to anyone you think might be interested, and encourage them to contact me directly at mick {at} wiremonkeys dot org. General Tionól information is available at http://www.gnipc.org/tionol-main/tionol-2014/.

I've updated the club website with details on the Uilleann Boot Camp, a new feature of the GNIPC 2014 Tionól. See for yourself, and register for the Tionól, at http://www.gnipc.org/tionol-main/tionol-2014.

To summarize the new information, there are two Boot Camp options:

- "Boot Camp" Registration at $99 gets you two full days of uilleann piping fundamentals; no prior piping competence required. You also get one private lesson with a guest artist, and one concert ticket.

- "Smell the Boot" Registration at $40 gets you admission to the first 90 minutes of Saturday's Boot Camp session (very basic instrument setup, playing a note or two), with no private lesson or concert ticket. Smell the Boot registrants can upgrade to the full Boot Camp experience for an additional $59 at any time.

Hope to see you at the Tionól!

Exciting news! An anonymous donor has just paid for two (2) "Tionól scholarship" registrations, which will be awarded to the first two prospective GNIPC 2014 Tionól attendees who contact me with a plausible reason for being unable to pay their registration fees themselves.

One scholarship is for a regular/full Tionól registration fee, including two full days of group sessions, no fewer than three private lessons with guest artists Joey Abarta, Tom Klein, and Tommy Martin, and a concert ticket. The other is for a Boot Camp registration (plus instrument rental): two full days of introductory instruction on the uilleann pipes, one private lesson with a guest artist, one concert ticket, and the use of a club instrument all weekend.

The obvious target demographics here are full-time students and unemployed/underemployed persons, but since our donor's objective is, first and foremost, to encourage Tionól attendance, I'm keeping the selection process informal. Simply PM me if you're interested: ask and ye shall receive!

See http://www.gnipc.org/tionol-main/tionol-2014/ for more details on the GNIPC 2014 Tionól and its Uilleann Boot Camp option.
