B flat chanter

Post by Uilleann203 » Mon May 05, 2014 8:11 am

Hi all,
I'm thinking of investing in a B flat chanter but not sure which maker. I know a lot of the good makers don't seem to make B flat pipes at all, ie. galloway, paddy hyland etc.
who would ye recommend?

I remember looking in to this a while back so I know that Jim Carroll was making Bb chanters, if you are in Europe.

Sam Lawrence of Hunter Pipes made me a very nice Bb chanter. It's the top chanter in the following photo:

I am aware of (only) the following makers currently making Bflat chanters:

Geoff Wooff
Sam Lawrence
Andreas Rogge
Brad Angus ?
And myself.

Derrick Gleeson may be game to make a B flat but I don't know whether he is offering them at this time.

I wouldn't suggest buying a B flat chanter from a maker who makes primarily concert pitch pipes.

I would think Joe Kennedy makes Bb chanters, as well.

Very possibly. I've never come across one. I'll ask...

Martin Preshaw's website has photos and soundclips of a Bb half set he made. Don't know if he's made others.

Also, I've seen a few Alan Ginsberg Bb chanters and sets come up for sale from time to time.

And I've seen at least one Bb half set by Chris Bayley.

I checked with Joe Kennedy this morning and he confirmed that he has made Bb chanters and that a whole Bb set is no trouble for him.

I think a qualifier here would be wide bore concert pitch sets but there as with every rule exceptions. At least one of the makers mentioned above makes mostly concert pitch (D) sets but they are narrower bored and have smaller tone holes that other makers of concert D sets. He definitely makes narrow bore sets in most pitches

Also Sam L makes wide bore concert sets as well as flat sets so the advice would be try different makes of chanters if possible and all depends on the maker and how experienced he is and of course how quickly you want it and whether he has places on his waiting list
