Triplet Exercises????

Post by piperscott0812 » Wed May 16, 2012 11:07 am

Dia duit gach duine :)
I've got a wee bit of a problem with my top hand triplets, my bottom hand triplets are fine and come very naturally to me but my top triplets either dont come out at all half of the time or are sloppy. Do any of you know any exercises that would help with sloppy/inconsistent(?) top hand triplets?

Try to relax your grip of your top hand on the chanter - so that your fingers and thumb can move with a lighter touch. Imagine that the chanter is ice cold while you are playing - it will help to achieve this lightness of touch.

Absolutely agree about relaxed hands. Keep a soft touch. Avoid the death-grip.

One exercise I found helped a lot, and you can do this for more than just triplets, is to play the movement slowly, then very fast, or as fast as you would want to if you were playing at speed. Alternate back and forth between slow and fast. The slow pass teaches your fingers the feel of the notes, and the fast pass practises speed.

thanks for the advice lads :) i dont have a deathgrip due to 7 years of GHB but I also think that might be why my lower hand triplets are better, because the G,F,E triplet is actualy an ornimentation on the GHB. But again thanks for the advice! :D tis much appreciated

Not to put too fine a point on it, but,I find my triplets (and other movements for that matter) come off better when the finger motion is powered/controlled at the metocarpophalangeal joint (first knuckle) and much less so by the other finger joints (interphalangeals). This gives a certain floppy feel to the fingers (as opposed to one, rigid, arching, claw), but I find this looseness makes for cleaner closure and release on the chanter.
