From Davys "Tying The Reed Head To The Staple" page With the plug still in place, coat the top of the staple with glue and insert the staple so that it is level with the 3/4" line, see picture top left, Making sure not to get any glue inside the eye of the staple, if you do use a pipe cleaner to rem...

Yet another C chanter for sale

I've put a chanter for sale on ebay. Made by me from ebony with brass and imitation ivory fittings. http://cgi.ebay.com/Uilleann-pipes-chanter-in-C-made-by-Tommy-Martin_W0QQitemZ280256926353QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item280256926353&_trkparms=72%3A552%7C39%3A1%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C240%3A1318&_trksid=p3286...

I've been making a good few drone reeds in the manner described on Tim Brittons website. It's a fair bit of extra work and you need a lathe but if you have access to one it's worth a try. Also you don't really need to use ebony. Rosewoods would work fine and as a source for the timber, you can buy r...

I believe he did. Funny though. He has done so much research measuring classic chanters and analysing their traits and bore shapes and sizes and then goes and makes a square one! Fair play to him though. I wonder was it an exercise to prove a point of sorts. "Square chanters do/don't work, I know co...

How do they sound?
Not what you'd call a round tone.
get it, ah, ah,

actually I've never heard one.... I'd be curious though.

Didn't Chris Abell make a square flute one time. Square tone holes, key pads etc.. Anyone remember that or am I dreaming.....

I'm working on getting sound clips done but here's one of the Rosewood C chanter. There is a dreadful hum coming from some part of the limited recording equipment I have but you'll get the idea of the sound. I'll post more clips as I fix the hum. http://www.archive.org/details/RosewoodChanter4 Tommy

I've seen it done on some older sets, Kennedy maybe. Personally, while I do think it works well to preserve a nice shine on the brass. The problem I've seen with it is that the laquer will wear away over time from the parts that that get regular contact like regulator and chanter keys, drone slides,...

I'd use 400, 600, 800, and 1000 for the same thing. Except use the 400 to get rid of the scratchs and then use the others for polishing. What I've done in the past is cut up some strips of the sandpaper and tape/glue it to an old polishing wheel and this will help buff out some of these scratches. T...

it's kind of hinted that droves of pipers have either been sending back their chanters to a well known French maker or have sold them on because they have been going out of tune. Can this be true? This is a tricky one. I could name a dozen pipers who have Froment full sets that don't play Froment c...

I spoke to Kevin about making pipes when I was in Dublin for the NPU Tionol.
He said one day he'll get back into it, when the kids get bigger, work slows down, etc.
