Re: Silver steel suppliers?

I need it to make a parallel reamer at 7.6mm to finish a drone bore. Those might do in a pinch but I was hoping to find a foot length of 7.6mm just to make life easy I guess it wouldnt take long to turn down a 3 inch length from 8mm and then braze on a full length of 7mm. Metal turning is still new t...

Bass drone design required

Does anyone have drawings of a rock solid bass drone design they would care to share, or know of such a design in print for sale that they could point me towards. I have finally bought some ebony and would like to use a known good design to do it justice.

Thanks

Re: Any info on reeding a taylor bore?

I have tried a two inch staple tapering from 17/32 to 16/32 and a 12.3 wide head. To bring the octaves into tune I will have to cut around 6-8mm off the staple. It also plays just a little north of c#. Im going to cut 6mm from the wide end of the staple and try an 11mm head next.

Re: Any info on reeding a taylor bore?

Thanks for that. I have tried various reeds which I had and best results came funnily enough from a flat reed made to geoff Woofes excellent videos at NPU. Ive tried a couple and they play well in tune. However they are what I could only term "reluctant" completely flat and unresponsive. Obviously n...

Any info on reeding a taylor bore?

Is there anything I should be aware of when making reeds for a Taylor bore? Its the one on the DMQ cd.

Re: Relevance of reed socket taper?

Thanks Bill, I was beginning to come to the same conclusion when I finally took the time to notice that most chanter measurements had this included. Ill start making a short reamer for this part of the bore.

Cheers

Relevance of reed socket taper?

I have been studying many chanter bores lately and have begun to wonder about the relevance of the reed socket taper. To be honest Ive never given it much thought before, I have a small tapered reamer which I use to taper out the reed seat. In most of the drawings I have looked at the reed seat tape...

Johnny Bourke measurements?

Has anyone measured any of Johnny Bourke's concert sticks? If so are they available for sale anywhere? I ask because as some of you know I have an unspeakable lust for the set Davey Spillane plays in that Bon Lavogue clip on youtube and I believe he used Johnny's reamers to make some of his sets. Th...

Re: What thickness brass for keys?

I think I sorted it out now. I reduced the head width of the reed to 12mm after trying a flat reed in and discovering it played well and consistently, albeit flat. Made a 12mm wide reed on a concert staple and bingo nice and stable. I assume that the internal volume of the reed head affects back d? ...

Re: What thickness brass for keys?

Thanks Bill. I rather like the Reid style regulator keys NOT that I am yet ready for regulator making, Im frustrated enough with the chanter. Made three reamers for it a la David Quinn. All measurements are within -0.02mm. Took two weeks to make them. Damn thing still giving back d problems. Its a r...

Too narrow throat?

Can anyone explain the effect it would have on playability if the narrowest point of the throat is too small. I know what happens if it is too large and I THINK I know what happens if too small, but I would like to see some independent confirmation.

Thanks

What thickness brass for keys?

Finally I believe I am ready to start looking at keys. What thickness brass should I be using? I tried a couple at 2mm but they seem a little flimsy. Im guessing about 3mm but I am happy to be told different.

Re: FS: Reedmaking stuff (Edit - Sold)

PJ, Im curious, what gouge are you using for reedmaking now? Ive just got a number four ashley Isles and its good, but I would like a gouge based on a 20mm radius for flat pitch reeds. That way I could gouge the cane and skip all the sanding apart from a light rub to clean up. Do you use the same go...
