If the problem is a gurgling or unstable bottom D (all other notes are OK), Dave Hegarty's book suggests either the V on the reed needs to be extended or the throat of the chanter is a little too wide. Before scraping the reed, or doing anything else that is not reversable, you should try the follow...

Your Thompson chanter doesn't look like any of the Thompson chanters I've seen before (or owned). Is it stamped by the maker? I'm not suggesting anything, just curious.

One suggestion: when using SKYPE, don't rely on wireless. The sound and picture quality can suffer. Connect the pc/laptop to the modem with an ethernet cable.

The settings in O'Neill's are not ideal for pipes. It's a good source of tunes but wouldn't be the best for a beginner.

Sam Lawrence (Hunter Pipes) is in Bradford. He's an excellent pipemaker and has practice sets for beginners.
