Re: Reed Making Kit

Bill H uses a different reedmaking style than I do. My shooting block is 4 1/2 " and the Ashley Isles gouge shafts I have are 5" except for one I ground myself which is now 4 1/2". Going back to the list of items in the OP, I don't have and have never used a winder on reg reeds or flat chanter reeds...

A Junior hacksaw is a useful addition to the items mentioned above.

Re: long scrape short scrape

That sounds logical, the more you remove inside the less you remove outside.

long scrape short scrape

I was hoping someone could through some light on the subject of long and short scrapes on CP chanter reeds. I've seen some reeds with quite short scrapes and others with long scrapes right up to the binding. What is it that necessitates a long or short scrape? Is it the internal construction of head...

Re: Mending a broken brass key?

For a one -off job, soft solder ( i.e. lead/tin) will work well, depending on whether it is a butt joint or key shaft on top of the key pad circular/rectangular body, the butt joint being weaker. I'd remove the spring or wrap that part in a wet cloth if appropriate.

Birl on the uilleann chanter!

1st time I've ever heard the GHB birl on an uilleann chanter. http://www.epipes.co.uk/products.html scroll to see hector the hero on the uilleann pipes, well not really, just a digital sample of UP on top of GHB fingering. May appeal to some, but few of us I guess. if you don't know what a birl is; ...

Re: chanter foot (tenon) dimensions

I am really not trying to be cantankerous so please don't take the hump. I never said your project/exercise/research was pointless, my conjecture was that much of your target audience may find the exercise of measuring and reporting their findings without the benefit of your knowledge, insight or re...

Re: chanter foot (tenon) dimensions

Hi there Mr headley,
I reckon people think that this is a pointless exercise and unfortunately unless you are able or willing to convince people otherwise you may not get any feedback.
All the best anyway with it.

Re: Robert Reid pipes

My guess is that the lines may have been of some help in aligning whatever appliance Mr Reid used to drill the holes for the axle pins. If he wasn't using some appliance to align, my humble guess is that in order to avoid wander from a thin drill he drilled from both sides, but I really don't know

Re: Pressure valves

but how do the pipes play at high altitude? is there a noticeable difference in sound or playing qualities? Jeff I played near Denver, Colorado once but the chanter sounded terrible. It was ok until arriving and ok after leaving. Can't say exactly what was so bad other than it just was not right in...
