Denis Crowley made that chanter, its one of his late ones due to the narrow bell end.Denis never liked working on the metal lathe so no decoration on the metal head. The reeds are not original.
The bag and bellows are not of Crowley manufacture.

I came across a book in the local library that might be of interest to anyone having a go at instrument making or just understanding how your instrument works. It is called " Musical instrument design"(practical information for instrument making) by Bart Hopkin. It explains things in very simple ter...

What woodturning tools do pipemakers use?

My uncles were involved in the furniture trade and one of them did some woodturning. He no longer has the lathe but there are loads of old chisels, in what was the workshop. What tools does a pipemaker use ? He said he doesn't want them any more ,so I may donate them to NPU or sell them if they turn ...

I have only seen three that do it ,they are Froment ,Brendan Ring and Lorcan Dunne ,but I'm sure there are more. I have also seen a Froment reg broken at the key blocks so I dont know if they make the blocks any stronger.

This has been an interesting thread to a point and I would have loved to answer some of the points by Billh as I found them to contain some inaccuracy and a lot of conjecture, but I have had enough. I have heard a few chanters made by the hands of Peter Hunter and they are beautiful chanters, the tone...

One thing about this thread surprises me:- it's kind of hinted that droves of pipers have either been sending back their chanters to a well known French maker . Second hand Froment chanters with rush included are rarer than rocking horse shit and when one does come on the market there is a crazed s...

Due to research done on muteing brass horns ,it has been shown that if a object of relatively small dimensions(relative to the bore)is placed inside the instrument it has no influence on the frequency spectrum, but has got an effect on the pitch. Rubbish. A D chanter is about 14.5 inches in lenght a...

If you want something done properly,do it yourself ,goes the old saying . So I done a little research and heres what I discovered ,my explaination is very basic , bear with me if its a little out in places but I hope you understand the principle. Leaving aside the reed for the moment, the tone of an...

With all the negative opinions on useing a rush I have not heard one solid reason based on acoustical principals why a rush should not be used. Maybe it wasn't mentioned because it seems obvious that any irregularity like that in an otherwise clean bore is likely to cause unwanted and unpredictable...

Coyne was also very reluctant to let anyone see him work, maybe the best makers are just to busy.

We may as well face the facts, there is not a single one of us who contributed to this thread that knows what they are talking about when it comes to understanding the acoustics of a chanter I think that it'd be fair to say that a good few of the contributors here do know what they're talking about....

I just think its laughable that some people sit there at their computers and say that some of the greatest pipers who have ever lived and possibly one of the greatest pipemakers have got it all wrong by useing a rush. Its just shameful arrogance at its upmost. Does the fact that froment has a waitin...

For me, at any rate, this is an interesting thread. Please let's not get distracted. Something that facinates me is the discussion of Stradivarius violins. Good one PJ ,in a thread about tuning aids. But just to answer your point about violins, its like Davy said its all down to personal preference...
