Re: Bass Regulator Reeds

You haven't mentioned how you are making your drone reeds: all cane, tube body with cane tongue, tube body with plastic tongue, etc. For myself I use a brass tube and cut a slip of cane. I sand one end of the tube down at an angle to form the slot. I sand the slip down to be smooth on both sides. I ...

Re: Bellows problem

Have you contacted Lawrence Thomson about the bellows problem? What is his solution?

Alternately, could you not get a local pipemaker to craft you the surface-mounted type of connector that you prefer? What about Martin Banba Gallen, for example?

Re: Spammers

I set up my forums to stop any new user application until I manually approve them (or delete them). It took a couple of months for them to catch on that I was no longer an easy mark for their automated set-up scripts but now I only get a few spammers per month. It only takes seconds for me to recogn...

And look what happened to him. ;)

There are no uilleann police, just those who would try to bully and browbeat others with their own personal tastes. Roll on if you choose, I say.

Re: Back D 'treble, roll or cran' and OAIM pipe tuition

I can help a little on the back D cran, but no video. Play the back D. Swipe downwards over the hole with the corner of your thumb. Make sure you cover the hole enough to cut the sound off completely for a just moment in passing. Swipe upwards over the hole with the corner of your thumb, again makin...

Re: David Daye/Patrick Sky pipes

Best choice is a pipemaker near you so you can go directly to them for assistance/guidance, especially in your formative years. This alone is worth the extra bucks. Starting with a half set is fine, and some would even go further and tell you to start with a 3/4 or full set. The best thing about UPs...

Re: The possibility of 3D printed reeds

This is somewhat similar to the oboe reeds made of Kevlar that have been available for several years. They don't sound like cane reeds. They don't play like cane reeds. But because the orchestra is used to tuning to the oboe (it usually being the most troublesome instrument) some people use them any...

Re: The possibility of 3D printed reeds

Not likely. A reed is made of more than one type of material, each material having its own characteristics. Consider just the cane portion. The cane is made up of at least two different types of material, one stiff and appearing as individual fibre strands, surrounded by a softer, more flexible elem...

Re: Burping Bellows!

Make sure that the flap is positioned so that it is hanging completely downward according to the way you hold the bag while playing. It stays in position mainly by gravity so you want it to be hanging vertically for a good seal. If this is an older set the leather flap may be a bit dried out. A TINY...

Re: Ideal length for neck of pipes bag

Depends on the size of the set, I think. For my D set I agree with you, but for my B set, with the old-style neck that plugged right into the top of the chanter, It had to have the tubing inserted as ootbox8 described.

It appears that Eugene has taken Paddy Keenan's flat-across-the-lap position one step further in that clip.

Re: Bass regulator - to fold or not to fold....

There is some small amount of leverage with the straight bass reg over the arm but you should be able to control the reg's movement by moving your thigh at the lower end of the reg from side to side, i.e. the leg doesn't remain static. As well, you can pull the bag closer or farther away. You'd need...
