Re: Silicon as bag and bellows seasoning... opinions?

I did this experimental silicone treatment bag and bellows in 2008. It is now almost 2016. Bag and bellows remain supple and airtight, and are in use almost on a very regular basis throughout. No problems with reed degradation observed. My personal conclusion is that GE Silicone works just fine as a...

Re: Uilleann Pipes wood, mounts, and tone

For what it's worth, each of the makers you that list, makes a serviceable high-quality hand-made instrument. Better to let the pipemaker suggest wood that they have on-hand-- a proper drying process takes years. Some woods, like Ebony, certain fruitwoods, Rosewoods, and Holly, and Boxwood are prove...

Re: Polishing Scratches out of Brass

Hi Chris. I do exactly what Dirk recommends, topping off with some red rouge compound on a buffer wheel. I just don't start any courser that maybe 300 or 400 now, and really try to avoid those bad scratches in the first place. The higher grades papers are wet sanded with (1200+). That process does a...

Re: Sharp Back D

Ted, do you have any insight into cause of this condition? I do understand the solution. It seems to crop up in my reeds more than not.

Re: Sharp Back D

I'm confident it is a reed issue, i.e. the chanter has seen its share of reeds that are spot on for back d. You describe it well... pressure resistant back D a little on the sharp side, and I seem to produce more reeds with this condition than not. So if i'm understanding, tension or excessive thick...

Sharp Back D

I understand the remedy for a sharp back D where other notes are in tune, but not the cause.

Can anyone explain?

What is going on with the pins in those blocks on the regs, i.e. the little white stripe of material above each pin on each block?

Re: cheap uilleann pipes

Harlow, Chris and Bill we hear nothing but negatives about these offerings from Sialkot and a lot of people buy them unknowingly because they are so much cheaper so is there anything that can be done with them ? Well, if someone brings one too me, I do my best to try and make it somewhat playable; ...

Re: Bellows Making

How many hours did it take you to make the "tackless" bellows? I'm curious, because I don't know that customers understand what it takes. Do you think you could have sold them if you took into account your cost and a small profit?

Re: Bellows Making

Route a shallow inset (~5mm horizontal) around the bottom 2/3 (~10mm) edge of the clapper leaving 1/3 (~5mm) of the edge for a strong chamferred lip. Leather is glued, then tacked into the routed inset and butts up against the lip. Be careful not to damage the lip when tacking. It all looks very tid...
