Re: Did the old makers use regular drill bits?

That's cool to see the old tools. Treadle lathe! Yeah it's hard to tell how much he used the twist bit for. If I remember right, I've at least heard of people using twist bits for pilots.

Re: Adjusting Reed volume and ease of blowing

Like outofthebox8 mentioned, the first experiment should be closing the reed slightly, by moving the bride down and/or squeezing the bridle gently with pliers. If there's not a good balance, some sanding of the lips might be necessary, but keep in mind it's just as easy to mess up a reed once you st...

Re: first gouge... just checking(for concert reeds)

I've never used a vintage gouge, so I'm not sure if it's worth the money. But it seems like a size that would work, as long as the steel is still good.

Re: first gouge... just checking(for concert reeds)

I'd almost recommend ordering directly from Ashley Iles, if you want a new gouge. But I didn't want to have to deal with returns if the gouge got damaged in the international shipping. I had to order 3 gouges from Amazon until I found one with a clean edge. That being said, returns with Amazon are e...

Re: first gouge... just checking(for concert reeds)

When I started making reeds last year, NPU had just stopped selling gouges online. And I couldn't find a good source other than Ashley Iles in Europe. So I decided to try "Kirschen 1481024 inside bevel" from Amazon. Maybe not the sharpest, but I've made a handful of working reeds with it.

Re: reamer metal: will this work?

Cool to see the update and photos, thanks for sharing, and the rest of the photos came through alright. Did you use a slow grinder for the reamer? Did you harden the reamer? It's fun to see someone try out more or less the very idea I had for a low-tech chanter making experiment. I don't have a meta...

Re: reamer metal: will this work?

Thanks for the update. Cool that you've made some progress and even a working chanter (though rough)! Personally I haven't had time to work in the shop, but I'll post back here if I make progress. Your photo didn't make it through.

Re: reamer metal: will this work?

I'm 95% done with my first concert chanter, and I am feeling the effects of not having proper reamer(s) available. What did you end up using for drilling and reaming? I personally haven't gotten that far, as I had to put my making on the side because of gigs. My first pass idea was to try step dril...

Re: Getting ino the craft of Pipemaking

Good advice from outofthebox8 above. I've recently started experimenting with pipemaking, so I understand the attraction. First of all, I echo that having a set and general knowledge of the instrument is paramount. And being able to make reeds before making pipes is also essential. The pipes are a c...

If I end up making any serious progress, I'll post photos here. We'll see if I ever find the time to complete a set.

Re: An Alternative Set

Wider keys are indeed an aspect of my current design idea. I also came across a wider key design that requires fewer tools to make, so I'm going to experiment with that first. Right now it's about seeing if I can figure everything out, step by step.

Re: An Alternative Set

I've considered having a 3rd drone with a higher note or a bass drone with an extra large bend to make it shorter overall. My first prototype will just have 2 drones. Two regs would definitely be nice. I'm going with one reg just because I'm trying to keep my first prototype as simple as possible. I...

Re: An Alternative Set

I've actually been working on an idea for a slimmed down set as well and have started experimenting with building a set. So far I only have the bag and bellows, but my next step is the drones. My current idea is: 2 drones and 1 reg. For me the reasons behind the smaller set is that I regularly perfo...

Re: reamer metal: will this work?

Did you end up trying the steel? I'll be trying to make a reamer for a reg this Fall. My plan was to experiment with flat tool steel. I'm not sure which company I will order from, but something like this: https://www.metalsdepot.com/tool-steel-products/o1-steel-flat?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI34mu-Pyk3QIVVJN...
