FS: Kirk Lynch 1/2 Set in D

I am selling my Kirk Lynch half set in D. This is a lovely instrument that I purchased from another piper in 2010 (I believe they were made in 2009). The chanter is ebony with key blocks (no keys) and a brass reed cap. Mainstock is cherry. Also including an extra chanter reed made by Kirk last fall....

Re: Beginner question-- set won't play

Late to the game with this, but if you haven't already, check out the Irish Cultural Center in downtown Phoenix. I lived in the Valley for 15 years and took whistle and flute lessons there from John Good (I believe he also plays pipes). The ICC offers classes and if they don't have a pipes class goi...

Re: cheap uilleann pipes

I am just wondering if the quality of the Mid-East Co bagpipes has improved over the years. I note that they are now using hardwood instead of plastic for their chanters and drones and that they are now offering cane reeds and some rather interesting composite drone reeds. The overall specification...

Re: tune for a wedding

But I thought Braveheart was Scottish. Why are uilleann pipes used
I seem to remember an interview where James Horner mentioned something about "I just decided to use uilleann pipes because highland bagpipes are too loud and obnoxious."

So it was an aural beauty contest ;)

Re: Bass drone or operator error?

You know what? Come to think of it, you're right. It is the upper octave. Sorry. That's what I get for posting while exhausted!

So, that being the case, any suggestions?

Bass drone or operator error?

I'm having an issue with my drones, and while I'm pretty sure it's operator error, I'm not sure. When I'm playing a tune with the drones going, usually about 1/2 way through the song, the bass drone will cut out. This usually happens (though not always) when I'm playing the back D. I'm 99.999999% su...

Re: Things you wish you knew when you started playing

I think you're doing amazingly well. You pick things up really quickly. And yes! There's the beer! (Speaking of, I need to get some for tonight on the way home...) Thanks, Marc! I've said it before, I'll say it again. I aspire to be you in two years :) And yes. After the day I've had today beer=goo...

Re: Things you wish you knew when you started playing

Thought I'd pop in here and give you an update. First off, you guys are brilliant. Every suggestion (even conflicting ones) has been helpful! I'm now on Week 6 of my pipes playing. The two most important things I've done have been to: take my pipes to the maker for a once-over and reed adjustment, a...

Well, as much as I hate to admit my age, 37.

You can teach an old dog new tricks, right?

Re: Things you wish you knew when you started playing

Thanks to all for all the wonderful suggestions! I really appreciate each one of you taking the time to help a newbie out. I'm going to be reading through this thread quite often, methinks. The pipes just arrived and I'm in the process of unpacking them and setting them up. I'm going to meet with 2 ...

Things you wish you knew when you started playing

As someone brand new to the pipes (my 1/2 set arrives today or tomorrow), I'm looking for some advice. What do you wish you had known when you started playing? What are some mistakes that you wish you'd avoided? Any other helpful pieces of wisdom you'd care to impart? A little background on me: I ha...
