Re: Back D 'treble, roll or cran' and OAIM pipe tuition

Many players swipe their back Ds so much that they are unable to perform nice, staccato "lift" Ds  . Actually, that was me, a few years back  . Using d-e-d triplets broke me of my swipe-only Ds.

Re: Taylor style flat keys vs teardrop keys?

Prefer Taylor: the keys provide greater surface area which is helpful if you play cross chords on the regs, as well as free-hand playing on them.

Re: Bass regulator - to fold or not to fold....

I've never been able to effectively play a set with a straight bass reg bar. Never.

Re: Help with deathgrip issue

It seems unrelated to what your hands are doing, but try this: sit back in your chair, straighten your back, and look at the ceiling while you play. Do this for extended periods. Often with death grip, or any other overly-intense aspect of piping, the afflicted piper's body can be seen curled and fo...

On Blu Tack

An often-recommended fix for a multitude of UP ills [sic] is Blu Tack . This term has become fairly generic at this point (e.g., kleenex), with almost any poster adhesive given the name. But it has been my experience that "blue tack" sold in N. America is significantly more sticky/tacky than its Eur...

Re: 2nd octave problem

Seamus - try wetting your fingers. It will help give you a better feel of the holes. But for god's sake don't get into this licking-your-fingers-before-you-play habit. I've seen pipers do this because yes, it helps you feel the holes, but it actually causes your skin to dry out even more! And who k...

Re: Sharp High E

Try rushing the staple with a thin wire (such an arched, or a j-shaped, piece of copper wire). For some reeds this can bring the octaves closer together. But it will probably flatten the scale over all, so you may have to insert the reed farther into the chanter.

Re: Triplet Exercises????

Not to put too fine a point on it, but,I find my triplets (and other movements for that matter) come off better when the finger motion is powered/controlled at the metocarpophalangeal joint (first knuckle) and much less so by the other finger joints (interphalangeals). This gives a certain floppy fe...

Re: Bag neck length ??? (newbie)

It is not unusual to see a beginner holding the chanter practically against the torso, so that said beginner can look down the front of the chanter when placing fingers over holes.
Don't do that.
